Key characteristics
Heat level: On the Scoville scale, Atomics Red Banshee rates between 1.2 million and 2 million Scoville Heat Units (SHU). For perspective, it can be up to 800 times hotter than a jalapeño and almost twice as hot as a ghost pepper.
Flavor: Beneath the extreme heat is a fruity, slightly sweet, and complex flavor. Slight bitternessis the first taste sensation before the intense, slow-building, creeping heat takes over.
Appearance:
Shape: The peppers are small, measuring about 2 to 3 inches long and 1 to 2 inches wide. They are round or bulbous and typically end in a point.
Skin: The skin is wrinkled, bumpy, and pockmarked, hinting at the heat within.
Color: The peppers ripen from green to a vibrant red.
Heat sensation: The immense heat does not strike immediately but builds over several seconds after consumption. It creates an intense, lingering burn that can induce sweating, hiccups, and numbness. Extreme caution, including wearing gloves, is required when handling these peppers, as the capsaicin oil can cause severe skin and eye irritation.
